On 2 June 1857 Edward Elgar was born in the small 19thcentury cottage now known as the Birthplace Cottage, in the village of Lower Broadheath, 3 miles west of Worcester. He was the fourth of seven children and the only one to be born in Broadheath.
The Elgar Centre was opened in August 2000 following a fundraising campaign and support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. For years visitors had crowded into the small 19th century Birthplace Cottage to view to fascinating collection of objects it holds.
